Why? Why do humans respond to truth in such a way? We seek truth, we claim to be willing to climb the highest mountain or swim the deepest sea to find truth. But when we find it, we first ridicule it. Then we violently oppose it, and finally accept it as being self evident.
This is certainly not the quickest route from point A to po Why? Why do humans respond to truth in such a way? We seek truth, we claim to be willing to climb the highest mountain or swim the deepest sea to find truth. But when we find it, we first ridiculed it. Then we violently oppose it, and finally accepted as being self evident.
Why?
I believe the reason is that we humans seek homeostasis.
Homeostasis: A property of cells, tissues, and organisms that allows the maintenance and regulation of the stability and constancy needed to function properly.
We seek stability and consistency and when the status quo is challenged by new information it is generally rejected until the new information reasserts itself with enough regularity that it becomes less threatening. Often, the new information or way of doing something, needs to become safer or more popularly embraced to become the new normal.
If we are not open to new truth, especially that new truth that requires us to examine some thing in our lives that we do not want to examine, we are headed to crisis. When we push truth away, we push God himself away. And we embrace the lie in exchange for safety and comfort. How foolish we can be!
Cry out for freedom
Freedom comes with a cry for radical openness. This is openness that values truth and reality over comfort and safety. It’s lament is “God, enabled me to see what I don’t want to see you today. Enable me to explore all aspects of you and myself that I don’t yet fully understand. Enable me to be open to anything you want to do in my life today. Give me new eyes to see and do ears to hear what I need to know about my life in my heart. Give me the courage, oh God, to accept the raw truth about my life. “
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
True disciples put themselves at the disposal of the teacher. A disciple is very clear that are not the truth, but what they do know is that they are desperate to know the truth. And therefore, our hubris and arrogance drains out of us and we open fully to allow the teachers truth to truly set us free! May it be so!!
