If you’re looking for a mess free, “hook for every question” religion, continue your search… Christianity is just not for you. But, if you seek a spiritual life based on the life of a God who understands the mess and the struggle of your life and mine, this is the place for you. A God who is willing to invest his very life to not only save your soul; but introduce you to the life you always hoped was possible.
But He will not avoid those dark dead ends on our journey where answers to life’s messiest questions seem so elusive, and hope seems frightfully scarce. If that is the kind of God you seek, he will meet you in those places and nurture you until you are ready to move through that time to newness.
Prayer only works when the object of that prayer is the God of messes. And I am here to tell you, if you don’t think your life is a mess just wait five minutes. You have no idea how quickly your profoundly ordered life of looking good, feeling good, believing good; can take a hard right hand turn. That incredibly well managed portfolio gone, those perfect honor roll children ravaged by cancer, that faith filled with canned answers and prosperity theology beliefs; evaporated.
I strongly recommend you find the God of messes as soon as possible. As soon as you really really encounter him, you will begin to learn the language of messes. You will begin to learn to bring everything in your life to this God of messes. Bring everything you are powerless over because he has power over all that stuff.
Surrendering the broken and bleeding things we can’t control is an incredibly wonderful feeling. Setting aside that need to look good as you walk in the church, and embracing the reality of actually being good is an incredible freedom.
In the past, there have been a number of times I caught myself assuming way too much responsibility for my life. When that happened, I would just say, “Today, playing the role of Jesus, is Lance “. Just acknowledging that led me to beautiful place of letting go.
This scripture defines the direction of my life today…
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.
